Hotel du Vin – Birmingham Review

Hotel: Hotel du Vin

Location: Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, close to the main station.

Highlights: Bubble Bar, free wifi, great coffee Located less than 10 minutes walk from Birmingham New Street Station in the heart of the Jewellery quarter, Hotel du Vin is not only one the city’s most beautiful hotels, it is also one of the most luxurious.

The cosy and ornate surroundings go hand in hand with its warm and friendly service, which is guaranteed under the expert management of its friendly hotel manager, Tom Gallimore. The hotel is situated in the building of a former eye hospital and it’s hard to imagine from the outside that this tardis like structure houses 66 uniquely styled bedrooms, a pub, a bar, a restaurant, a spa, a gym, good sized function rooms and even an open air courtyard complete with retractable roof.

Noted for its cuisine, there are a couple of dining options that you just have to try:

  • Pub du Vin – perfect for an after work drink, serving English classics such as fish and chips, pies, steak and hand cut chips.
  • Bistro du Vin – Serving a delicious array of French dishes, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients in elegant but unstuffy surroundings.

For those of you who like a tipple or two, the gorgeous Bubble Bar, decorated in the style of the Venetian Cafe Florin, is the place to be.  Hotel du Vin sports more than 30 different champagnes, an enviable wine cellar, with over 400 bins and a full sommelier team guide you through them, a comprehensive cocktail menu and a vast selection of spirits. When I’m in the city, this is where I like to base myself to work during the day; it’s perfect for meetings, light snacks and serves great coffee, or if you really want to indulge, there’s always afternoon tea.

Why go? The impressive, classy surroundings make it perfect for entertaining a client, with free wifi throughout and the USB chargers built into the the plug sockets. I was extremely taken with these, what with having an iPhone with the battery life of a gnat. It’s all about indulgence! My first tip would be to check-in as soon as you can escape from the working day. The baths are huge, the hot water is amazing and you can indulge and pamper yourself with the Miller Harris toiletries.   The beds are huge, the linen luxurious and there’s a handy stack of glossy magazines for you to flop on the bed and read.

The basement spa has a fantastic range of sumptuous treatments including massages, facials and all the usual maintenance treatments such as waxing, nails, tans and lashes using ESPA, St Tropez and Jessica products. Serious about female traveller safety, the hotel also had secondary locks installed in order to meet the maiden-voyage.com standard.

Need to know: Check in is from 3pm and check out is at 11am. Rooms start from around £140 B&B.
